Effortless Well-Being is a path to developing the engine for movement.
When I wrote Effortless Well-Being (2003), my reach was to all people—to give them a way to truly transform their way of being. It is about building form, function, and foundation. These practices are the preparation for what I am offering to teach now. It was never meant as a “mental health” manual, nor about blissful enlightenment—though I believe the work can naturally support those objectives.
I wrote it because, after years of learning, training, research, trial and error, and off-road tribulations, it became clear that most respected awakening traditions share a core essence across time and cultures. I saw value in presenting this essence in a clean, concise package, with minimal distractions.
Most books either focused narrowly on one or two aspects of mind-body-spirit development, or else cluttered the essentials with unnecessary material. My aim was to provide a direct, distraction-free path to real transformation. Effortless Well-Being: The Missing Ingredients for Authentic Wellness was published in 2003 and was remarkably well received, achieving top ranks in health, wellness, meditation, alternative medicine, and other categories, including Amazon’s general Hot 100 Best-Sellers in some regions.
The book covers the essence of wisdom on learning deep skill, and how to breathe naturally, calm and focus the mind and body within practices of standing, sitting, moving, and lying down. It also explores additional insights on eating, drinking, sleeping, and regular movement, as well as historically powerful ideas about progressing with awakening to each moment and optimizing performance. These are lifetime practices to always deepen, and they are also the way to build the internal engine that prepares you for the movement work I share now.
I didn’t want to wait for standard publishing, so I released the first edition independently. Later, a worldwide Spanish-language publisher and a South Korean-based publisher created beautifully crafted versions. I also commented on wellness in the NY Post, New York Daily News, small and large radio shows, and other outlets. I gave well-received training workshops for K-12 teachers on reducing stress through book-related strategies and techniques. I was honored to receive heartfelt thanks and humbling praise from readers, including a top business achiever who had just retired and stumbled on the book. It was also an honor to learn that the book was recommended reading for a top-tier academic executive leadership seminar.
I soon chose to step away from the spotlight in favor of a more private teaching environment as a professor. Recently, I retired from academic psychology. Now, I am fully focused on the Morris Wellness Center mission. I have EWB2 in the works now, as well as a new work focused purely on movement. I’m excited to share subtle but significant enhancements to the original book text, with insights gained since EWB first appeared. Interestingly, there is little I would change today, but I do have additions in areas of advancing further with movement.
I am particularly interested in helping people integrate the ability to move well into the practice, which is why a “walking in stillness” exercise was offered as one of four key practices in EWB. With directed guidance, I can much more rapidly help a person use Effortless Well-Being as an engine to develop truly powerful movement abilities.
